what foods are ok to feed your parrot?

I have an 18 month old macaw and blue and gold mix. I feed her mostly anything we eat, she loves double meat ravioli, but I am starting to notice that she has really bad breath could this cause it? what other things can you suggest? 10 Points to best answer

Parrots should not have halitosis (bad breath) and is likely indicative of a problem in the crop. It's likely that there is a bacterial build up or infection in the crop as a result of improper diet.

I advise taking your bird to the vet to have her crop swabbed and cultured. The vet may also wish to clean out her crop, which may require using anesthesia, so it's best to take your macaw to the vet before breakfast (or withhold her breakfast until after you get her home.)

In the meantime, here is a list of foods to include in her diet:

Coconuts
Palm nuts (red palm oil)
Mango
Papaya (red), including the seeds
Oranges, including pits, and skin
Bananas
Blueberries
Kiwi Fruit
Pomegranate
Pineapple
Raspberries
Strawberries
Melons, including seeds
Sweet Potato
Yam
Carrots
Sugar Snap Peas
English Peas
Romaine Lettuce
Green Curly Kale
Swiss Chard
Raw Organic Brazil nuts, Walnuts, Almonds, and Pistachios
Sprouted seeds

It's by no means complete, but this should give you a good start. :D

DO NOT FEED THEM ANY OF THE FOLLOWING:
Avocado
Coffee (bean or beverage)
Chocolate (in any form)
Soda (any carbonated beverage)
Alcoholic beverages (including beer, wine, & spirits)
Milk products (due to lactose intolerance - this is true of all parrots)

Foods we can eat aren't necessarily good for parrots. Anything containing sodium (salt) or sugars (including honey) are best avoided. And although they will eat meat, it isn't something to encourage, and is better left off their menu.

I suggest you join a good parrot forum, one that provides good advice from knowledgeable people who actually own and live with macaws.

Best of luck with your B&G
